Absolute Value. The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. For example, - 7 is 7 units away from zero, so its absolute value would be 7.

Absolute value means "distance from zero" on a number line. To represent the absolute value of a number, we use a vertical bar on either side of the number. Let's try an easy problem to fully understand what absolute value means.

Let's say we are asked to find the absolute value of 4 and - 4. The absolute value of 4 would be 4 because it's 4 units away from zero. The absolute value of - 4 will be 4 also because it's 4 units away from zero.

Remember that if you're asked to find the absolute value of a negative number, the absolute value will always be the positive version of that number.
