To add and subtract fractions you have to get the same denominator.

Our denominators are 4, 8, and 2. They all go into 8.

So, now we need to convert our mixed fractions.

    1 3/4 = 1 x 4 + 3 = 7 add the denominator, 7/4

    3 1/2 = 3 x2 + 1 = 7 add the denominator, 7/2

    So, now we have 7/4 + 7/2 + 5/8.

Like i said, we have to get the same denominator. So we times the numerator and denominator until we get 8 as the denominator, eg:

    7/4 * 2=14/8

    7/2*4=14/8

    5/8*1=5/8

Now that the denominators are alike we add.

    14/8 + 14/8 + 5/8 = 33/8

    Answer : 33/8
