A rectangle is five times as long as it is wide. if it were 24 cm shorter and 24cm wider, it would be a square. what are the dimensions?

    Let w = width of the rectangle then

    5w = length

    Now since the sides of a square have equal length we get

    5w - 24 = w + 24

    4w = 48 therefore

    width = 12 and so the length = 5*12 = 60
