    Let x be the value of the his purchases without the discount. The $64 is the value of the 32% discount.

    64 = 0.32x; x = 200

    Thus, he should have paid $200 if there was no discount. The amount he paid (p) is only 68% of this value. p = (0.68) (200) = 136. Hence, he paid only $136.
