    You simply the first side 11a - 3a = 8a.

    So we have a new equation: 8a + 9 = - 7

    Plus 7 in both side and you'll get 8a+16 = 0

Then divided eight on both side and you'll get - 2 as your answer

    8a+9=-7 subtract 9 from both sides. 8a = - 16 divide both sides by 8. a = - 2
