The cost for groceries was $11.20 before sales tax. How much was the total cost of groceries after the 5% sales tax was charged?

    To convert a percentage to a decimal we divide it by 100. So, 5% =.05

    To find the tax, multiply the cost by the tax rate

    (.05) (11.20) = 0.56

    Add this to the cost to get the total

    $11.20 + $0.56 = $11.76
