What happens to the surface area of a cube when each side is doubled?

    Areas are proportional to the square of the dimensions, and volumes are proportional to the cube. This is true even for irregular shapes. So if the edge of the cube is increased by a factor of n, the surface area is increased by a factor of n^2.
