    2x + 4y = 12

    -2x + 3y = 26

    Add the two equations, and you get:

    2x + (-2x) + 4y + 3y = 12 + 26

    4y + 3y = 12 + 26

    7y = 38

    y = 38/7

    Plug y = 38/7 and solve for x.

    2x + 4 (38/7) = 12

    2x + 152/7 = 12

    2x = 12 - 152/7

    2x = 84/7 - 152/7

    2x = (84 - 152) / 7

    2x = - 68/7

    x = - 68/7 * 1/2

    x = - 34/7

    x = - 34/7

    y = 38/7

    x = - 4 6/7

    y = 5 3/7

    The solution is (-4 6/7, 5 3/7) OR (-34/7, 38/7).

    Both the answers are correct. It's just that in one answer, the fraction is in mixed form, and the other answer has it as an improper fraction.
