Scientific theories can be changed or replaced when enough experimental evidence is found to suggest that the theory cannot make valid predictions. They can also be changed or replaced when a newer theory is proved that falsifies the earlier one. For example, an atom used to be considered the smallest component of matter. But later theories proved that in fact, it is not. It can further be broken down into protons and electrons.
