Use g = 9.8 m/s2. From the top of a cliff, a person throws a stone straight downward. The initial speed of the stone just after leaving the person's hand is 9.7 m/s. (a) What is the acceleration (magnitude in m/s2 and direction) of the stone while it moves downward, after leaving the person's hand?

    Explanation:

    Any freely falling body whether started from rest or with some initial velocity has the same acceleration i. e., the acceleration due to gravity g = 9.8 m/s².

    The stone which is thrown with a higher velocity may have the final velocity greater than the final velocity of the stone thrown from rest.

    If a stone is thrown with a velocity then the time taken to reach the ground will be less compared to a stone falling from rest.

    In both the cases the acceleration due to gravity will be the same.
