Let's say you had a pulley system with a mechanical advantage of 3. If you want to lift a boulder 10 meters off the ground, how far would you have to pull the rope?

    The force times the distance is the energy applied to the system. If it is easier to lift by a factor of 3, you will have to pull it 3 times further. That is 1/3 the applied force over 3 times the distance to conserve energy. So the rope is pulled 30 meters
