    Captain Day’s men believed that the Massachusetts government had issued taxes and other measures that harmed the rights of citizens. While General Shepard’s government militia thought they were protecting their rights and protecting the new nation from anarchy and chaos. This is why they both used the declaration of independence for their basis.
