Progressives advocated for labor unions, but conservatives wanted to limit their power. In the early 1900s, conservative Republicans were mostly wealthy businessmen who did not like labor unions because they hurt business and profits. Progressive Republicans wanted the government to be more active in making life better for the people, so they supported and advocated for labor unions.
