Identify the unconditioned stimulus, Five year old Ethan is watching a thunderstorm from his window. A huge bolt of lightning is followed by a tremendous thunderclap, and Ethan jumps at the noise. This happens several more times. There is a brief lull and then another lightning bolt. Ethan jumps in response to the bolt.

In the scenario above, Ethan jumps at the noise of the thunder, here Ethan's response was not pre-determined and was only triggered by the noise of the thunder.     Ethan's jump in response to the lightning bolt is a conditioned response as he braved for the noise of the thunder which he expects to follow after the lightning.
