The main motives of national unions are to gain security, better compensation, better work culture and atmosphere etc for the labourers. They work for the benefits of labourers and protect them from exploitations such as very low wages, poor working conditions etc. These are the some common demands. Apart from these workers in hazardous industries and other risky jobs also require insurance and wage premiums. Such demands are also made by unions.

Two most important tools implemented by unions are : collective bargaining and strikes. Collective bargainig refers to negotiation process with employers. When bargaining fails workers hold strikes to stop the production process and force the management to listen to their demands.

Corporations are profit making organizations. If they provide extra benefits to workers that increases their costs of production and reduces profits. so their prime motive is to provide as much low wages as possible and spend as much less as possible on the production process, working conditions etc. So they adamantly oppose unions.
