Originally created on February 14th, 1903, as the Department of Commerce and Labor of the United States and renamed on March 4th, 1913 as it is known today.

    The department's mission is "To promote the creation of jobs and improve the standard of living of all Americans through the creation of infrastructures that promote economic growth, technological competitiveness and sustainable development". Among its tasks is the preparation of economic and demographic growth data for decision making of trade and government, the issuance of patents and trademarks, and assist in the preparation of industrial standards.

    The department is currently managed by the secretary of Commerce of the United States.
