The hole in the ozone layer has been over Antarctica since the 1980s. The ozone layer is found in the upper atmosphere that protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the the sun. Ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer.

The ozone layer is damaged by a group of pollutants known as chlorofluorocarbons or (CFCs). The size of the hole has since reduced as regulations preventing the use of (CFCs).

How long has the Antarctic ozone layer been studied? Ozone was first measured from British Antarctic stations during the International Geophysical Year of 1957/58 ... If CFC releases had continued at the high rates of the mid 1980s, a continental sized ozone hole might have appeared over the Arctic.
