    In Ancient Muslim, Sunnis believed the caliph should always be a relative of Muhammad. The Shi'ites, on the other hand, believed the caliph should be elected.

    Ali was the prophet's cousin and son-in-law, not grandson. An article on Jan. 4 about the basic differences between Shia and Sunni Islam referred incorrectly to the Prophet Muhammad's succession ... (Although Sunnis believe this, Shiites believe that he chose Ali, his cousin, and son-in-law.)
