    According to Locke, it is necessary to give up certain liberties under the laws of nature upon entering into civil society. In this case, the individual submits him or herself to the majority, and agrees to abide by the rules and decisions of the majority. These liberties are given up for the "mutual preservation of their lives, liberties, and estates
