I believe the answer is: a. Cheap goods manufactured in factories met most needs

Humans' daily needs would most likely revolved around 4 products: Foods, drinks, clothing, and Housing.

Cheap manufactured goods could fulfil 3 of that 4 products, while the needs for housing could be met simply by renting other people's apartment or house. This make the majority of american do not really need to be self sufficient after industrialisation.
