Federalism is a form of government in which sovereignty is shared between the central, national or federal level and the federal states. The individual parts (federal states) are often granted a relatively high degree of autonomy.

The federal form of state organization is the most effective form of political organization of a state when said nation has an extensive territory and populated by large numbers of people. For example, in the case of the United States, the distances between the different regions of the country are enormous: in this way, a centralized government based in Washington DC would be practically unable to manage resources and solve the problems of such a distant state like Oregon. For this reason, in these situations, the power of the state is subdivided into smaller territorial sections, in order to be able to give due attention to each of the territories.
