Space can generally be a space unused, but still with meaning. I may leave a whole black area behind a yellow tree, but it is still a sky even though there is nothing else along with it.

It deepens on what you mean. It could be a vast area of darkness in which light does not shine in or an empty area were something use to be or should be.
