Why was Realism met with such criticism in America?

Realism was met with such criticism in America because of the subject matter. It was quite different than what its predecessor, Romanticism, had to talk about. Here, the writers would just write about realistic things, everyday things that could happen to anyone, which was not something America was prepared to experience at that time.
