A sense of pride being important to a sense of self-worth is important to Africans and their history of colonial rule because, due to the colonial rule, Africans have been ruled by many different countries with different cultures and languages which are, in turn, all different from their native cultures and languages. So having a sense of pride in their own personal cultures and languages gives them a sense of self-worth in themselves as a people and a nation, despite the times of being ruled by others.
