They both employed the use of Chiaroscuro where had an interest in playing with the effects of light and Ruisdael used sparse lighting to define the shape of his structures and subject matter amid the enormity of the landscape. Van Ruisdael's employed the use of strong local color unlike Caravaggio which evident that he was inspired by the restrained palettes of these painters. Van Ruisdael never painted human figures he only specialized in landscape painting while Caravaggio's works mostly focused on effeminate young men and religious scenes. They both employed the use the Tenebrism style i. e. for Caravaggio it was implied by an extremelighting effect in which figures emerge from darkness into bright light while for Van he used the thick type of paste that creates astounding lighting effects and reflections. The later Caravaggio's painting became complex and darker which represented his last years as amurderous fugitive while van Ruisdael's paintings befitted into brighter.
