    Leon Battista Alberti (Genoa, February 18, 1404 - Rome, April 20, 1472) was an architect and art theorist: an Italian humanist, in the style of the Renaissance ideal and philosopher of architecture and urbanism, painter, musician and sculptor. His life is described in Giorgio Vasari's Vite. He personified the Renaissance ideal of the "uomo universale", that is, the humanist literate capable in numerous fields of activity.

    Alberti's interests turned to science and art. An attentive reader of Vitruvius wrote his famous treatise De re edificatoria (printed after his death) on the basis of the art of antiquity. Based on the music of numbers the harmony of proportions and conceived the building as a whole, solidary in each of its elements. It was excellent in designing plants and models.

    From 1443 he spent more time in Rome, becoming assistant to Pope Nicholas V, advising him on numerous projects, such as the design of the reform of the church of St. Stephen Redondo (St. Stefano Rotondo) and the new plans of the Vatican. In Rome in 1452, he completed his principal theoretical work, "De re edificatoria libri decem" or Ten Books on Architecture, the first great modern treatise on architecture.
