Intaglio is the printmaking process in which lines are incised into the surface of a plate. It is the direct opposite of a relief print. Western artists used the process of intaglio by means of metal plates that are cut and ink after. In intaglio printing, a cutting tool called a burin is used to cut into the metal plate the lines that are going to be printed, this process is called engraving.
