How can you tell simply by listening that a symphony is from the Classical rather than the Romantic period?

The harmonies are more simple and predictable, the pieces are shorter, have fewer movements, and the orchestra is smaller with fewer instruments. The classical symphonies follow a strict form, and confined to harmony rules.
