Gothic master builders use geometric line and patterns in their design because it imparts a feeling or order and harmony. Since the Greeks, ideal geometric shapes in architecture have always been used for this reason. The Romans did the same which was followed by new innovation in the Middle Ages. "Gothic" was first used by Renaissance critics to scorn the architectural style for its lack of conformity to the classic Greek and Roman standards. However, a closer look reveals that this style is firmly rooted to the ancient use of geometry and proportion.
