In what ways did composers of chant vary their melodies

Chant is a type of music created for religious services in western tradition. Each chant is shaped by its role in the service. Tropes began to expand the chants by altering them in three ways, adding new music and words, adding only new music, or adding only new words. These tropes flourished during both the tenth and eleventh centuries.
