The bubonic plague spurred the awakening of European art which glorified the holiness and essence of life.

Not only was death and macabre a reoccurring theme after the horror of Black Death, but artists who had contracted the disease painted their last pieces reminiscing on the loss of life.

Various paintings also were of biblical reference. As is human nature, it is speculated that biblical references arose due to the high mortality rates, and those looking for any means of an afterlife.
