Magellan lost favor with the King of Portugal when he got involved in a political quagmire or entanglement. In 1512, he returned to Portugal after exploring the islands of present day Indonesia and as far east as the Moluccas or Spice Islands. By 1513, he battled alongside the Portuguese forces against the Moors in the Moluccas and suffered an injury that left him with a limp for the rest of his life. Soon after he lost the king's favor after he was accused of trading with the enemy and other charges of financial irregularities. For this, he renounced his Portuguese citizenship and in 1517 headed for Spain to seek support for his continued exploration plans.
