What were the key variables that contributed to the movement of African American popular music from the racial margins into the mainstream in the 1950s? What key artists figured into this process? What was the response from the mainstream?

    The term 'Rhythm and Blues' is marketing level used to identify various style of black popular music produced during 1940 and in the mid of the 1960s. The music was related to the regional styles along with a background in swing bands, blues, gospel music. The music was performed in bars, clubs and in the areas where African American communities located. The popularity of this music among the African Americans led to the production of records. The screening of this music in the television resulted in the popularity of music among the white youth in America. In the south African American music was not much embraced as they tried to stop the production.
