Richard Wagner was another composer in the 19th century to reckon with. He's primarily known for his operas and some of his later works were "music drama". He fundamentally changed opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ("total work of art"), by which he sought to produce the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama.

One of the composers who contributed to the program music would be Ludwig Van Beethoven. Beethoven was reluctant to create a program music but he was able to create Symphony No. 6 which was centred on the pastoral life of many people during the 19th century. He also has written Piano Sonata Op. 81a, Les Adieux which talks about goodbyes.
