Why wasn't there a great need or desire for books during the middle ages?

During the 5th and 15th centuries, until the beginning of the Renaissance, medieval society was rural and self-reliant, which was based on the feudal system. People did not have access to regular education, only Church members and nobles could read. Knowing the situation of the population, Church members wrote texts and books that were restricted to members of the clergy and members of the nobility. Therefore, religion was the main of the restricted literature in the Middle Ages.
