Monosaccharide is made up of a single unit of a sugar molecule and when two units of sugar molecules join together they make a disaccharide. Polysaccharide is a long-chain polymer of carbohydrate which is made up of many monosaccharide units that are joined together by glycosidic linkage.

Disaccharide is converted into monosaccharides like glucose or fructose by enzymes which are used by the cell of the body to provide instant energy to the body. Polysaccharide play role in making structural components of cells like cell walls of bacteria and plants and exoskeleton of insects.

Polysaccharides can also act as storage form of energy which is used when glucose in the blood is not available. For example, glycogen is the polysaccharide that gives energy in the absence of glucose.
