A baby is born with ambiguous genitalia. what should the nurse emphasize when discussing this with the parents

    She should first emphasize the that it's more common than we think and this is not parent's fault (sometime, most of them feel guilty about that). The chirurgical surgery can be done at any age and without many risks, it's a common surgery with great results. The main problem is the choice the parents have to do : wait and let the child decide, do the surgery to get a boy, do the surgery to get a girl. She can adds that a decision is not required now and they can let the baby grow up a little bit to decided. Kids may have psychological sequelae or questions about her/his sexual identity especially at adolescence. Psychological follow-up may be envisaged and, in all cases, upholding from parents is essential.
