    Hox genes in species are highly conserved. This, however, does not mean that mutations do not occur in hox genes. Rather, this is due to the disadvantage of mutation in this region. An individual with a mutation in the Hox gene is less likely to survive even past birth because of the significance of this gene to the development of the body.
