In eukaryotes, genetic information is passed to the next generation by processes that include mitosis or meiosis. Which of the explanations identifies the correct process and supports the claim that heritable information is passed from one generation to another? Mitosis, followed by cytokinesis, produces daughter cells that are genetically different from the parent cell, thus insuring variation within the population. Single-celled organisms can fuse their cells, reproducing asexually through mitosis to form new cells that are not identical to the parent cell. During mitosis, DNA replication occurs twice within the cell cycle to insure a full set of chromosomes within each of the daughter cells produced. In asexual reproduction, a single

    Answer;

    In asexual reproduction, a single individual is the sole parent and passes copies of its genes to its offspring without the fusion of gametes.

    Explanation; Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that involves only one parent such that the offspring formed is genetically identical to the parent. During this type of reproduction the sole parent passes the genes to the offspring, without the fusion of gametes, thus it does not involve the process of meiosis unlike the case of sexual reproduction. In this type of reproduction the cells will undergo through mitosis type of cell division to form two genetically identical cells, which means they have equal number of chromosomes that are identical. Therefore, it does not result in genetic variation, as compared to sexual reproduction, however, it is faster and requires less energy.
