    The tiny structure known as chloroplast is the site where photosynthesis occurs in leaves. Chlorophyll is contained in the chloroplast which is a colored pigment and light is absorbed for photosynthesis by chlorophyll.

    The chloroplast is a double membrane structure and contains another inner third membrane known as the thylakoid membrane which forms folds. The thylakoid membranes are composed of compartments and arranged in stacks. Chlorophyll is present in the space between the chloroplast and thylakoid and is called the stroma which is the site of photosynthesis in leaves.
