    Both cells and viruses containing genetic material. A cell has DNA in its chromosomes. In eukaryotic cells, the chromosomes are found tightly coiled and densely packed in the nucleus while in prokaryotic cells, the chromosomes are circular and are found packaged in the cell region called nucleoid.

    A virus also has nucleic acids which can be either DNA or RNA but not both, and a protein coat which encases the nucleic acid.
