Pleural empyema is a condition in which there is an accumulation of pus in the pleural cavity caused by microorganisms. Empyema usually occurs after pneumonia, injury or chest surgery. This condition is often seen in children and older adults. Alcoholism, diabetes and a weakened immune system can increase the chances of having pleural empyema after pneumonia.
