In a food chain, the producer (also known as an autotroph) is the organism that is able to produce its own organic compounds (food) in which heterotrophs (consumers) can then directly and indirectly rely on for their organic compounds. The flow of energy (represented by the arrows) in a food chain always begins at the producer.
