Explain why bryophytes and seedless vascular plants are classified in different phyla?

    The seedless vascular plants can be divided into three groups: Lycophyta (lycophytes), Sphenophyta (horsetails), and Pterophyta (ferns). Lycophytes appeared during the Devonian period but split into two lines during the Carboniferous period.
