The ordinary process of cell division resulting in the formation of two daughter cells, by which the body replaces dead cells. The daughter cells have identical diploid complements of chromosomes (46 in human somatic cells).

The big idea here is to understand the differences between the two types of cell division in your body; mitosis and meiosis.

Mitosis is for growth and repair of cells in your body. You get 2 new identical cells each with 46 chromosomes.

Meiosis is for making sex cells; sperm and egg. You get 4 non-identical cells each with 23 chromosomes.
