Sweat glands cool and provides a layer of lubrication to the skin. Without sweat glands, our skin would dry to a crisp. The distribution of sweat glands varies among individuals. However, some parts of the body has more sweat glands than others. According to the famous surgeon and anatomist Henry Gray, the sweat glands are most concentrated on the palm of the hand, with around 370 sweat glands per square centimeter of skin. In contrast, the back and the legs have the least with around 60-80 sweat glands per square centimeter of skin. This may explain why palms sweats unusually profusely at times.
