In order to understand the stability of a community, ecologists want to be able to measure biodiversity in an ecological area. One method for measuring and calculating stability is to calculate a Simpson's index for diversity. The formula is shown above. Calculate the Simpson's index for biodiversity for the tree species in a forest with the following distribution: 230 oaks, 35 pines, and 14 hickories in a mature forest.
