The IOOS is a government program known as "The Integrated Ocean Observing System". The program was created as a national-regional partnership that works together in order to provide more up to date tools and to improve, as well as, forecast ways to enhance the modern economy while protecting the environment. Part of this program alerts scientists and marine biologists to integrated ocean information and makes it available in near real time. This method of easier and better access to vital information is improving our ability to understand and predict coastal events, including major events, such as storms, wave heights, and sea level changes. Having this knowledge allows society to forecast all aspects of modern lifestyles, including retail and economy. The Gulf of Mexico Coastal Observing System (GCOOS) is the regional association for the Gulf of Mexico.
