In the nucleus. The direction for the formation of proteins is given by genes. A gene is a section of a DNA molecule that encodes for a protein. DNA is transcribed to RNA and then translated to a protein. The majority of genetic material is located within the nucleus of the eukariotic cell, with the exception of a very small proportion of genetic material found in the mitochondria and chloroplasts. In the prokariotic cells, the genetic material is within the cytoplasm.
