    During digestion, the blood picks up nutrients absorbed through the gi tract and transports them to the different organ systems of the body. The oxygen and nutrient-rich blood can be transported throughout the body by the different blood vessels that surround it. Without blood circulating through the body, it would be hard for the body to maintain its homeostasis and survive for long.
